Information technology and ethics.

As I argued on my earlier posting i,ve slowly immersed myself in using laptops studying online and of course i love digital music,if I ever feel I haven't heard an artist for a while i can check them out on my space or the proverbial favourite check out good old classic Tom Waits.

Of course I feel as comfortable using digital cameras as I did old styley cameras and it deffo keeps the Armstrong clan/iwi happy back in ole blighty or Britain. But i always enjoy learning new  thing creating a flickr account makes it easier for my family and friends to see my photos.Skype is also a very useful tool for the family being able to contact family in America ,Austraila,Britain. It is a tool that makes it easier to live in a different continent to your Whanau.

Ive been thinking about the point of what limits my use of IT and I guess in the past its been mainly lack of confidence ,feeling stupid when I got stuck with many things i.e it took us months to get skype set up .When I get lost sometimes find there is no way forward and i'm sitting with something I cant use for months. My retro and slightly moody lap top definitely can make life harder every now and again and has definitely been a barrier in the past, but we have an understanding and are happy living and working together until she decides to go to computer heaven(hopefully when i start earning again.

Another barrier that linked is not having the money and time to keep up with any thing approaching cutting edge.
Therefore I think time and an increase in confidence is slowly expanding my use of IT, although it will always be in a slow slightly cynical sort of expansion.

Information Technology is used in almost al aspects of OT
(id like a sentence with both IT and OT ,almost as confusing as DFI and DFO)
Back to focus OTs like any professional have to use computors more and more for information storing,For communication.
On my placement my therapist worked with teenagers and had to text to make sure they were turning up when they were running on teenage time.
Assistive technology is a huge topic
In america there is a series called Curbcut which as the presenter argues compares assistive technology to a curbcut. These are  ramps that allows a person on a  wheel chair to cross the road it takes away the barrier .The presenter argues assistive technology can help take away the barrier of a disability.By showing these ideas on the net they hope to find new and exciting uses for this assistive technology.
This series is excellent and a great resource for OTS.
Information technology is vital for many people to be able to take part in occupation and every day tasks,It is also an important part of the world as we know it enveloping work ,home, communication leisure.Personally I believe it is vital for me to embrace technology to the highest level I can ,to use it hopefully to improve peoples lives.

I don't know if its being English or my own form of paranoia but I feel uncomfortable using blog /Facebook .Its a concept that I find scary although some friend have reconnected with mew through my wifes Face book account.I also dont feel comfortable using mobile phones and still sometimes feel invaded when people can get hold of me any time.
The ethical implications of sharing and transferring of information on the internet and other IT devices is immense .

First of all its worth pointing out that Information technology challenges traditional ethical values ,once information goes on the net  it is made public .People can add to the information they can see it in a different way and argue from a different stance and of course they can copy or download the information .An example I always think off although its a music one is when the American army used Joe Strummers rock the cash bar as their "theme tune " for one of their many wars, which was not exactly the way he wanted the music to be remembered for.
When something is used ethically on the net it can have a great power net- working people to share ideas and come up with something new for a different situation. Its also sometimes relatively easy to communicate with someone and their ideas on the net.You tube and companies like wikipedia have their own ethics and use their own form of censorship without stifling the creativity .      See the following link for you tubes censorship rules.
The debate on ethics is particularly hot at the moment with the government just  passing an act that aims to tackle downloading on the internet .It will work on the three strikes and you are out theory ,with people getting three warnings and then paying a large fine .This has led to a lot of debate on one side companies saying how much they have lost on revenues from downloading to the argument that this is the beginning of the end of the internet as we know it with control from governments and large companies and consortium's

Social justice generally refers to the idea of creating a soceity or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognises the dignity of every human being (Education and Social Justice By J. Zajda, S. Majhanovich, V. Rust, retrieved fromhttp/wikipedia/social justice)
It is easy to argue there is a technology divide with who can afford and are educated to use the technology which is a role that Occupational therapy often challenges by education for people that need it ,if a person was given a camera and photo album as part of an intervention ,The person would be educated with all knowledge to understand the benefits and how to use the technology.

There is an arguement that there is a divide due to the cost of IT equipment and that is emphasised by the cost  of some modifications. On the other hend social justice has been brought about by Occupational therapists using IT enabling people to return to work and to live in their own homes.

Intellectual property (IP) is a term referring to a number of distinct types of creations of the mind for which a set of exclusive rights are recognized  Retrieved on 15 april 2011 from

As students we have to reference all material we use through the APA system .As professionals we need to be sure we are respecting intellectual property.
As occupational therapists using technology for interventions the intellectual property can be blurred for example using information retrieved from the net as professionals we have to be as thorough as we can and follow all appropriate policy on the matter .
